Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy supports the sensory and motor skill development of students and plays a key role in their ability to accurately take in sensory information from the environment and from their body in order to participate in school and home life. The OT will help students build skills to support the foundations of learning, including managing their body throughout the day for work, rest, and play. This includes supporting motor planning/coordination, trunk strength, writing, drawing, and colouring, sensory regulation/processing, and self-help skills, including eating and dressing independently.

As part of the Occupational Therapy service, many students will have a supportive daily program provided to support their emotional and physical readiness to learn and engage in the classroom. This is called a Sensory Diet of activities. Treatment goals and exercises are set up by the Occupational Therapist and are regularly implemented by our team of Developmental Therapists and Teachers. Occupational Therapy also supports group readiness skills. Children may have a mixture of individual and small group sessions to support social emotional development and regulation skills needed for day-to-day life.
